Hard to tell if it is a good idea or not. My surgeon hate using metal on sports people unless totally necessary as it leads to many complications - plus without them the bones heal better.
I mean you guys broke your back. I broke my ankles both a couple of times and they haven't been the same since.
I would hazard a guess and suggest that scar tissue is a big problem there. My ankles and knees were very painful until I had an op to remove scar tissue.
I would think breaking your spine would leave some questions dancing around in your heads on whether or not high level competition or hell riding period would still be a good idea.
Any decent crash with mondo breakage or woundage can do that. Way back when I did a shoulder, collar bone and dislocated both my knees - took me a good 6 months to ride at the pace I needed to as I was just not prepared for more pain

Later on I learned to ride through the pain barrier when necessary and found the mental side of coming back from injuries easier. Saying that - I would not race competitively with rods in unless it was to like complete a series when running for a title. Big crash again and you can permanently destroy the area around the rods. A gymnast I knew lost an arm below the elbow while practicing with a rod in trying to get back to Olympic qualification level.
