When the sport evolves, you purest need to come along with it. Marketing is where and how all the money for this sport is coming right now. Outside sponorship blewup once they adopted the permanent numbering system because of the marketing value it brought with it.
I could give at rats a## about the system they use now. I think it is stupid. It should be earn your number from the previous years results. the casual fans are the ones in the nose bleeds more worried about whos buying the next beer and seeing a crash. they dont even know what is going on.

I will try to find you the studies from a couple of the top US business schools - they have very differnt findings.

meh - I think it just happened that the sport evolving and career numbers happened to coincide. Besides DMG - has the sport really evolved? We have way less bikes being sold and riders only wanting to ride a part of our sport - that is not evolution to me.

Less bikes are being sold because of the economy and we have 2 riders riding supercross only. I think the sport's doing alright lol.

You can look it up on all the schools you want, put the fact is, the average fane relates to a rider and his number.
SX has evolved from a niche sport into what it is now, a main stream sport, and the majority of the money doesnt come from "racers". They are marketing to a broader range of customer now, not just guys with bikes. If it was just guys with bikes they are marketing to, you think Redbull or Makita are even in the game? NO, they put those big signs on the rig for Joe bag of chips to buy what his favorite rider uses, thats who is spending the money.
You bring back the old number system and all the people who are there because of the show will lose intrest. They will lose their conection with their guy. To people who dont race, Reed is 22, they know who 7 is, they knew who 4 and so on. Its like Nascar, people like the 24 car, or # 3, its the way the public identifies with them.

So why are they changing it for 2010?

When career numbers were implemented, the AMA stated that it was for the sake of the sponsors. I believe the sponsors were requesting the change. That's why I don't understand why they're changing it now. With the economy the way it is, we should be very, very nice to the sponsors who are staying in the game.
*Edit*
I thought they were changing it. Jeff Alessi isn't keeping his 801, and a lot of numbers got reshuffled. Did this happen last year?

The current number system is what I've grown up with.
In all the sports I've played we were allowed to choose our own number, and it feels cool to represent it each week.
Again, it's all I've known though. It would be cool to have the numbers as a ranking system... would one problem be those riders who get hurt and come back next season, they have a high number but are running up front.
BTW, look at Travis Pastrana, how much money has his number earned him?

His number has not earned him anything. He did it with his crazy mindless isane stunts.

Yeah, that sentence didn't turn out how I intended. Just bringing up Travis as one guy who's used his number a lot in promoting himself off the bike.
