Nine times in the past, wildly popular rider Kevin Windham has finished second in either the Supercross or Motocross points. It's one streak he's both proud of and anxious to change.
"The championship has alluded me all these years but to be a contender every season and have the incredible support of the crowd, the respect of my peers, and a legit chance to be on the podium every race is still an incredible feeling," Windham said.
After a resurgent 2010 campaign aboard his GEICO Honda that resulted in a few more event wins, yet another runner-up result in the championship chase, and a two-year contract extension, the 32-year-old pro thinks it might finally be his turn.
Windham turned pro in 1994, earning Motocross Rookie of the Year honors. It was two years later in 1996, however, when he started to show his real capabilities with numerous event wins both indoors and out. He went on to earn the 125cc West championship that season and repeated the feat the following year.
His winning ways continued through 2002 when Windham suffered a devastating injury, breaking his femur in Atlanta, forcing the then 23-year-old to be sidelined for the majority of the season.
Endearing himself to fans, he made a triumphant comeback in the 250cc Motocross circuit the following season, scoring two wins and a total of eight podiums. He challenged for the championship, ending the year as runner-up to Ricky Carmichael. Most importantly, he discovered how to be a better rider.
"After that wreck I learned how to be fast while also protecting and preserving myself," Windham said. "You have to stay off the ground and avoid injuries. Normally, riding safer means you're going a touch slower but I've managed to figure out a way to race smart and stay fast. It's really something I'm very proud of."
The Louisiana-bred racer, who also had a pilot’s license, had one of his most impressive seasons to date in 2008. He earned four wins, didn’t finish any lower than fifth place throughout the season, and finished second in the SX standings.
The 2010 season was yet another year of resurgence as Windham broke through in a big way, notching back-to-back wins in Seattle and Salt Lake City. As the curtain closed on the season Windham rode his momentum on to five straight podium finishes. He closed out the effort with another second-place showing.
Though he had taken a hiatus from MX in recent years, Windham also filled in for an injured Davi Millsaps in 2010. In only six races as a substitute, Windham proved he hadn’t lost any of his outdoor swagger, as he went on to win the title in Steel City courtesy of a first and second-place finish in the event's two motos.
Teased by his younger rivals for being the "old man" of the sport, Windham said it's going to be hard to step away when the times comes.
"When I was younger I thought about retiring a lot more than I do now." Windham said. "The obligations of racing -- the travel, the appearances, and sponsor stuff -- it can be really tough on a young person that's just getting started. That's when you think about bailing.
"Now the only thoughts I have about retiring are sad ones because I don't want that day to come. I know I'll have to face the music soon because I'll get too old to do it but it's going to be tough. I've been riding all my life. I'm not looking forward to the day I won't be able to compete and race in front of the crowds."
