After the Anaheim II Supercross, it’s looking like a four man race for the coveted title of 2012 AMA Supercross Series Champion.
With everybody still healthy and strong, this is shaping up to be one of the most competitive years in Supercross ever. Most seasons in the past the title has come down to one or two guys - but right now there is a major the contrast in the consistency of Chad Reed and Ryan Dungey versus the brutal speed of Ryan Villopoto and James Stewart.
All four of them have won AMA Supercross Series Championships. Ryan Villopoto is the defending champion. Ryan Dungey won the title in 2010. Chad Reed has won two titles, 2004 and 2008, and James Stewart has also won two championships (2007 and 2009).
Chad and Ryan seem to ride 'consistently', while RV2 and Stewart seem to have more 'speed'. Which one of those four will emerge champion come the finale in Las Vegas? There are 13 races still to be run - and then we'll find out!
Two riders who we haven’t seen much of yet this year but will be factors are Kevin Windham and Justin Brayton. Windham has been around a long time and has more experience than any other rider out there. Brayton is just beginning to get into his groove on the Honda. It has taken some time for him to adapt to his new bike. After having the fastest lap time in practice last Saturday afternoon, as well as being up front in the heat and main event, Brayton will keep gaining more and more confidence as the series continues. I expect Justin to be a contender for both the podium and for a win.
So the big question for the 2012 SX season is, "What is going to take the number one plate home: speed or consistency?”
