Thunder Valley National: Jett Lawrence Takes Control, Lucas Coenen Shocks the 450 Class

MORRISON, Colo. — Thunder Valley delivered one of the most interesting rounds of the 2026 Pro Motocross season, with Jett Lawrence taking control of the 450 Class championship while Belgian standout Lucas Coenen stole headlines in his American Pro Motocross debut.

Jett Lawrence was dominant in Colorado, going 1-1 on the day and moving into the championship lead. But this was not simply another Lawrence headline. The bigger story leaving Thunder Valley was the arrival of the Coenen brothers, especially Lucas Coenen, who immediately proved he could run with the very best riders in the world.

After Hunter Lawrence opened the season strong at Fox Raceway by winning the first two motos at Pala, the championship fight has continued to shift. At Thunder Valley, Jett answered with one of his strongest performances of the summer and used the Colorado round to grab momentum in the 450 title chase.

Jett Lawrence Takes Over the Championship Lead

Jett Lawrence came into Thunder Valley looking to make a statement, and he did exactly that.

The Honda HRC Progressive rider grabbed both holeshots, controlled the pace from the front, and managed pressure from multiple riders throughout the afternoon. In Moto 1, he had to deal with challenges from Hunter Lawrence, Haiden Deegan, and Lucas Coenen. In Moto 2, he once again put himself out front early and never allowed the race to get away from him.

His 1-1 performance gave him the overall victory and moved him into the 450 Class points lead. After entering Colorado behind Hunter Lawrence in the championship, Jett left Thunder Valley with an eight-point advantage.

It was not a perfect season story. Hunter controlled the opening round at Pala. But Thunder Valley may prove to be the round where Jett officially shifted the momentum back in his direction.

Lucas Coenen Makes a Massive Statement

The biggest storyline of the weekend may not have been the winner. It may have been the rider who finished second.

Making his Pro Motocross debut, Lucas Coenen wasted no time showing that his MXGP speed translates to American motocross. The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider qualified near the front, battled with the Lawrence brothers, and finished an impressive 2-2 for second overall.

In Moto 1, Coenen kept charging late and finished close behind Jett Lawrence after a wild race that included mistakes, penalties, and constant movement inside the top five. In Moto 2, he backed it up again, quickly working into second and holding strong behind Jett for the remainder of the moto.

For a rider making his first Pro Motocross start, it was a massive performance.

Coenen did not look like a visitor. He looked like a future championship threat.

The Coenen Brothers Are Now Part of the Conversation

For American fans, Thunder Valley felt like the official introduction to the Coenen brothers on one of the sport’s biggest stages.

Lucas Coenen was the clear breakout story in the 450 Class, nearly matching the pace of the established stars and proving he belongs at the front. His speed, confidence, and ability to adapt quickly made him one of the most talked-about riders of the weekend.

Younger brother Sacha Coenen also continues to carry major attention as one of the brightest young talents in the sport. Together, the Coenen brothers represent a new wave of international talent that could have a major impact on the American motocross scene if they continue to line up against the best in the United States.

The Lawrence brothers are still the benchmark. But after Colorado, the Coenen brothers are no longer just names fans hear about from Europe. They are part of the conversation now.

Hunter Lawrence Salvages a Podium

Hunter Lawrence entered Thunder Valley as the championship leader, but his day was anything but easy.

After a strong opening round at Pala earlier in the season, Hunter has remained firmly in the title fight. At Thunder Valley, however, mistakes and penalties forced him to fight from behind in both motos.

He finished with 4-4 moto scores, which was still enough to land on the overall podium in third. It was not the day he wanted, but it kept him close enough in the championship to remain a major threat moving forward.

Hunter now trails Jett by eight points heading into the next round.

Haiden Deegan Shows More 450 Speed

Haiden Deegan once again showed that he has the pace to battle near the front of the 450 Class.

In Moto 1, Deegan worked his way into the lead battle and looked capable of challenging Jett Lawrence before mistakes and penalties pushed him back. In Moto 2, he rebounded with another strong ride and finished inside the top group.

Deegan did not land on the overall podium, but his speed continues to be one of the biggest stories of the season. Each week, he looks more comfortable in the premier class, and a 450 overall win feels like a real possibility if he can clean up the small mistakes.

But the biggest takeaway was Lucas Coenen.

The Coenen brothers have officially arrived on the American motocross radar, and the sport feels more exciting because of it.
